Most homes end up with a light switch by every door, a remote for the blinds, a thermostat in the hall and an app for everything else. Lutron HomeWorks replaces all of that with one system. It is a whole-home control system that brings your internal and external lighting, ultra-quiet electric blinds and curtains, heating and audio-visual equipment together, so a single button or a single tap does what four or five controls used to. Good technology should disappear. HomeWorks does the complicated part in the background and leaves you with something anyone in the house can use, including guests and children. Elegant keypads replace banks of switches, each button engraved with what it actually does, so "Entertain", "Cook" or "Goodnight" sets the whole room at once rather than asking you to adjust six dimmers. Scenes are set up during commissioning to suit how you really use each room, and they can be adjusted at any time. There is nothing to learn and nothing on display that looks like technology.
Total Control
HomeWorks gives you control of the whole house from wherever you are. Lights, blinds and curtains can be operated from a keypad, a tabletop control, your phone, tablet or watch, and the Lutron app works just as well from the sofa as it does from another country. Set the blinds to lower as the sun comes round, wake the house gradually in the morning, or put the whole property into an away mode that varies the lighting through the evening so an empty home looks lived in. HomeWorks also integrates with heating and cooling, audio-visual systems, security, and voice control through Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant, which means one system rather than several competing ones.
Lighting and heating account for a large share of what a home costs to run, and HomeWorks reduces both without anyone having to think about it. Dimming lights uses less power and makes lamps last considerably longer. Occupancy sensors switch off lighting in rooms nobody is using, and daylight sensing dims lights when there is enough natural light coming in. Automated blinds do the same work on temperature, closing to hold heat in on winter nights and shading south-facing glass on hot afternoons, so heating and air conditioning have less to fight against. Automated shading also protects furniture, artwork, timber floors and fabrics from sun damage, which matters in rooms with a lot of glazing.
